omy!
I was driving home from the Sankanac Farm in Kimberton when a turkey vulture swooped down in front of my car. I had to slam on the brakes and swerve over and even so I nearly hit her. She landed a few yards from me and just stood there looking at the car. Instead of leaving, I backed up to get fully over on the side of the narrow road (Yellow Springs Rd. in Valley Forge). She flew up to a very low hanging branch. I got out of the car, walked over to her and we just stared at each other.
This is the second time in the past week I’ve had a vulture swoop in front of my car and land close by. What’s up with that?
o, and I am so kicking myself for not having my camera with me! She was absolutely beautiful!

omens…yes, but how to interpret? vultures signify purity, truth, death/birth/transformation…what else?
btw, i adore turkey vultures. they are so fuckin’ cool.

Read into her behavior, the way she treated you, where she flew and landed. She may have just been being herself, but she may have brought a message for you.

Same thing happened to me on Pawlings Road near Valley Forge Road just a few days ago. The bird landed by the side of the road and just watched me pass by.
In Native American lore (I know that’s a big generalization, but there seem to be similarities across the various tribes) Vulture is frequently the first to come out of the sky to Earth, also many stories speak of Vulture being burned (heance the red head) trying to bring fire to Earth. Vulture is frequently a helper or teacher. So… I know I have a lot to learn and could use some help. I suppose I’ll be meditating on this over the weekend.

vuture myths
actually, the story goes that the vulture saved the earth from the sun as it was living too close to the earth and the creatures were dying from the heat. two other animals, fox and possum tried and failed. vulture was able to push the sun far enough away to save the earth but all the magnificent feathers on his head were burned away, explaining why vulture has a bald head.
if i remember correctly, coyote is the one who brings fire to the people…but i can’t remember which nation the story is from…i’m assuming southwest, but…

I found quite a few different myths, can’t remember which tribe had the one about vulture bringing fire.
Currently, I’m up to my ass in Celtic Gods (hah, if only!) getting our serviuce ready for June 22. I have to edit the story of Miach, and work on the ritual, and also incorporate Paganism 101 and “Why does this pagan stuff today mean ANYTHING to me as a UU.”
Yeah, the program committee doesn’t ask for much…
