I was just wondering what kind of media you used to make this image? The eye of the heron is just so perfect and looks just like the eyes in my heron face closeups. You are such a fantastic illustrator…blows me away. Love the frogs too, but they’d better be careful. I’ve seen many a frog in the bill of a heron.

      Hi Judy,

When I do illustrations for print or online, I start out with a pencil sketch then switch to digital. I use a wacom tablet and Corel Painter software. Corel Painter is built for us “traditional” artists in that its brushes mimic things like #2 pencils, different sorts of inks, charcoal, crayon, oil paints, etc. What makes it really cool is that you can do iterative saves so that you can stop and later see your progress or backtrack if you go off sideways. Also, for print its nice as there’s no degradation of the image going from art to scan to digital file since it’s digital from the get go. I typically do a lot of preliminary sketches in pencil with lots of anatomical research to get to know the animal and how it is in the world.

And thank you for the kind words. I’m happy to know you like my work.
