today, i needed to plant things.

i planted some mums and some pansies.
i put a cement rabbit in the little bed in front of the living room window. i put a frog planter next to the front stoop. i put a little purple aster in the frog planter.
i raked leaves and swept the front walk and driveway.

i hung a witch ball in the front window.

tomorrow i bury dad’s ashes and then i plan to thoroughly clean the house. i will sweep out the dust and negativity and sprinkle salt across the threshold and then clear the space with sage and drumming.

i hope to have a clear, sparkling house by saturday so that i can go to the memorial service with a clear mind and a clean slate (so to speak).

when all is done, i may take a long, hot, hot, very hot bath with salt and lavender to wash away the rest.

so, my dad died this morning. i didn’t expect it. even though he was frail. even though he suffered from a sad heart and a confused mind, i didn’t expect it.

but i am relieved because the dread of lingering in a state of dementia is something i didn’t want to see him go through. he’d not been happy or content in this state. for years he was able to fool the world because he was so smart. but i knew. and so did he.

he had a quick and apparently quiet heart attack. i don’t think there was time to suffer. i don’t think he had the acuity to even know what hit him.

i said goodbye at the funeral home. they were kind enough to cover him in quilted white satin as he lay on the gurney waiting for transportation to the crematorium. i didn’t know i wanted to see him until this afternoon. i realized that i needed to say goodbye. i needed to finish this.

so i looked him over, setting his last image in my mind. the change in color, texture and temperature. i laid my hand on his forehead and felt his cold.

i said goodbye to my dad.

i wonder when the tears will come…

so, what middle earth race am i?

Your result for The What Middle Earth race do you belong to Test…

    Wizard

You scored 0% Size & Strength, 76% Morality, 41% Aggression, and 76% Intelligence.

You scored high in morality and intelligence, but lower in physical strength and aggression, which means you’re probably a Wizard. Counted among the very wise and (with that one exception) good creatures of Middle Earth are the Wizards, or Istari. Though they appear as old men, the Istari are actually powerful Maiar spirits sent from Valinor to Middle Earth to act as caretakers of the land and guides to men and beasts. Their supernatural heritage means they’re also the only line of defense against rogue Maiar like Balrogs. Though only Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast are named through the novels, there are two other Wizards at large in Middle Earth, quietly working to bring tranquility to their surroundings.

Your polar opposite is the Urûk-Hai.

“Nun on the run, nun on the run!
“We are so going to hell.”

Pushing Daisies is one of the funniest shows on TV this season. Maybe one of the funniest shows ever!

So, the day after the day after we read this in the NYTimes regarding the sad state of our financial affairs…

The euphoria that swept Wall Street on Monday gave way to a sober reality on Tuesday: a recession, perhaps the deepest one in decades, may be unavoidable.

A day after the stock market staged one of its biggest rallies in history, buoyed by the government’s plan to rescue banks, investors retreated once again.

When will the “experts” and the government grow up and begin the hard work of fixing the actual problems that caused what appears to be our next big depression, instead of what they are doing …

“YAY!!! WE GOTS LOTS OF MONEY!!! RALLYBUYBUYBUY!!!
    “booooooooo….all the money’s gone….sellsellsell”

    *sigh*

Face it, the invisible hand is all twisted and crippled. It’s time to make some fundamental changes in how we do business. Unfettered capitalism has just kicked our greedy asses.
